5 Ways To Make Time For Yourself When You Have No Time

Let's be honest with each other for a second.

When was the last time you did something just for you? Not for your kids, your clients, your boss, or your team. Just for you.

If you had to think about it for more than a few seconds, this article is for you.

Women show up. For their families, their colleagues, their clients, their communities. It’s one of the most beautiful things about us. But somewhere in all that giving, we put ourselves last.

Taking care of yourself isn't indulgent. It isn't selfish. It isn't something you get to do after everything else is handled. It is the foundation everything else is built on. So if you've been running on empty, consider this your reminder. Your permission slip. Your gentle, but firm push.

Here are five ways to make time for yourself, even when it feels impossible.

1. Stop Waiting for a Big Block of Time

We've romanticized self-care into something that requires a whole weekend, a spa reservation, or at minimum an uninterrupted hour with candles and a bath bomb. And because that version feels out of reach, we convince ourselves that nothing smaller counts.

It does.

Five minutes of quiet before anyone else wakes up counts. A slow cup of coffee without your phone counts. Small moments of intentional rest add up, you don't need a whole weekend or an hour-long bath to take care of yourself.

The small moments are available to you right now, today. Start claiming them.

2. Protect One Thing on Your Calendar That's Just for You

You schedule everything else. Client calls, team meetings, school pickups, dentist appointments. You protect those blocks of time because they're "real."

Here's the thing: your time is real too.

Choose one recurring thing that's purely yours. A slow morning. Lunch with a friend. (A Northshore Women in Business event!) Put it on the calendar and don't move it. You show up for everyone else without question, start showing up for yourself the same way.

3. Recognize the Difference Between Busy and Overcommitted

Busy is temporary. Overcommitted is a pattern. And if you never have time for yourself, the problem isn't your schedule, it's what you've said yes to.

Review your commitments once a month and ask honestly: is this still serving me? What's on your plate that's draining you without giving anything back? What did you say yes to out of obligation or guilt?

You are allowed to let things go. Every time you do, you create a little more space to breathe, and a little more room for yourself.

4. Sometimes Good Enough Is Good Enough

Perfectionism is one of the biggest time thieves there is. It disguises itself as having high standards and caring about quality. Sometimes it is those things. But often, it’s in our head.

The email doesn't need three revisions. That flyer you have been working on is already solid. You can keep refining indefinitely, or you can send it, close the laptop, and go do something that fills you back up.

Done and rested will almost always outperform perfect and wiped out. Give yourself permission to call it finished.

5. Ask for Help Without Apologizing for It

Delegating at work, leaning on your people at home, hiring support in your business, that's not a weakness. That's how you create space to actually breathe.

We were taught, directly or indirectly, that strong women can handle everything. That asking means you can't keep up. None of that is true. Asking for help is one of the most strategic things you can do.

Ask for help. Accept it graciously. And use the time you get back for yourself.

The Bottom Line

You cannot give what you don't have. So stop waiting for life to slow down, and start showing up for yourself the same way you show up for everyone else. The people who love you, the ones you're sacrificing yourself for, would much rather have a present, whole version of you than a depleted one.

You deserve to be on your own priority list. Not at the bottom. Not as an afterthought. Right there at the top, alongside everything and everyone else you show up for every day.

So protect your time like it matters, because it does. Start small. Start today. Even five minutes that are just for yourself counts.

The most important investment you'll make this year isn't in your business. It's in yourself.
